Naoko Tanikawa

I was first introduced to the kick wheel in Florence, Italy, when I tagged along with my mother on a pottery trip. Thanks to that experience, I minored in ceramics while majoring in architecture in college, and it's been 10+ years of creating, observing, learning, and recreating.

I enjoy working with the smoothness of porcelain, usually wheel thrown and high-fired.

My creations tend to be functional, structural pieces with clean lines, although sometimes I top off my pieces with small sculptures. I like the predictability and orderliness of forms with the juxtaposition of unexpected lines and colors that happen from the glazing and firing processes. No matter how similar, each piece is different with its own curves, marks and character.
